Dopamine:
From Survival Molecule to Overload in a Fast-Paced World
Dopamine is often described as the brain’s “reward” or “pleasure” chemical . . . but that description is incomplete.
At its core, dopamine is a survival molecule. It evolved to help humans seek food, learn from experience, continue the human species, and stay alert to what mattered most in the moment.
In early human history, dopamine was activated in short, meaningful bursts. Today, it is triggered constantly—by notifications, emails, work demands, social media, yummy (but often not so healthy snacks), and nonstop stimulation. The problem is not dopamine itself! (Not talking about, substances of abuse, that is a topic for another day).
The problem is that the modern environment keeps this system activated continuously. Over time, this can lead to mental fatigue, restlessness, difficulty focusing, emotional blunting, and anxiety. Many high-functioning adults describe feeling driven yet depleted—wired but exhausted!!!

What to Do?
Many people who recognize themselves in this brief description benefit from working with a provider who takes time to understand the whole picture — not just symptoms, but context.
You don’t have to navigate this alone. Understanding how your neurochemistry (Brain Chemistry) works is often the first step toward meaningful change!I
